What a great way to celebrate EARTH DAY! Come listen to the story of a group of people that worked together to protect our Lake Superior watershed!
During the coldest winter of the past century (2013-2014), a coalition of tribal citizens, environmentalists and neighbors occupied treaty protected lands in the Penokee Hills in an act of civil disobedience that successfully halted a multinational mining corporation’s plan for mountaintop removal in the Lake Superior watershed. Known as the HELP Camp, for the Harvest Education Learning Project, the Camp has continued to be a powerful inspiration for grassroots activism and community resistance to environmental, economic and cultural exploitation. WATER PROTECTORS, written by Nick Vander Puy and illustrated by Patrick Rolo, is the story of that winter.
With a BA in philosophy/history from Ripon College, Vander Puy has engaged in a variety of livelihoods in his working life, including Teamster, Public Radio reporter and news producer and as a fishing guide. He currently leads a seasonal life, guiding, gathering wild rice, fishing, hunting, netting and making maple sugar in northern Wisconsin.
Nick Vander Puy will be offering a presentation about the WATER PROTECTORS at the Forest Lodge Library at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22nd at the Forest Lodge Library. Books will be available for purchase. Do plan to attend this event and hear about this important local environmental activism.
