Sometimes it feels like a convenience, other times, not so much. Our library system will send you an email advising you that an item you had checked out is about to be due. You think, “Wait a minute! I already returned that!”
Just so you know…until we hear otherwise, we will continue to quarantine returned items before even we touch them. In fact, our recommended quarantine time was just changed from 72 to 96 hours given the results returned on tests on items with glossy paper. (for example.) So, it could certainly be that the item you returned will not even be handled here for another day or two. So, please be patient! And, of course, we haven’t charged fines in a very long time and we sure aren’t going to start now!
This same protocol applies to items we receive from other libraries. If all goes as planned, the bins we receive will have a date on them so we know when the requisite time has passed and we can crack them open. If they are unmarked, we have to set them aside for the full recommended quarantine time.
We quarantine to keep everybody safe, eh? Hang in! Wear a mask and keep washing your hands. We’ll all get through this…and, better, together!
